Melbourne International Comedy Festival

Australia’s largest cultural event is also its funniest and from April Fool’s Day (April 1) onwards the city of Melbourne resounds with laughter. The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world. Hundreds of local and international artists feature in the three-week event with performances including stand-up, cabaret, theatre, debates and art exhibitions.

FunnyFest Calgary Comedy Festival
Where: Calgary, Canada
When: Early June
If you can’t get a bellyful at this 11-day festival with some 11,000 punch lines we’d be surprised. Some 70 performers come to offer stand up, improvisation and sketch performances.

The Carlsberg Cat Laughs Comedy Festival
Where: Kilkenny, Ireland
When: May/ June
Famous faces regularly make an appearance at this five day festival usually held over the first weekend in June. Stand-up comedy is a real feature of the Cat Laughs and there’s traditionally a soccer match on the Sunday between the Irish comics and the rest of the world.

Just For Laughs Festival (Juste Pour Rire)
Where: Montreal, Canada
When: Mid July
For 10 days in Montreal in July let your belly shake and your sides ache with some fine comedy entertainment. The first week of performances are in French, while the second week brings in big name English acts. There are also plenty of free outdoor events aside from what is happening in the clubs and theatres. Street performers, music and dancing is held throughout the city, particularly in the Latin Quarter.

New York City Underground Comedy Festival

When: Early October
If you like a laugh venture into the basement cafes and clubs in Greenwich Village over ten nights to revel in the comedy of up and coming performers.

New York Comedy Festival
Where: New York City, New York State, USA
When: Early November
For an annual laugh fest in New York, head to the variety of events and venues across the city at the New York Comedy Festival. One of the standout acts is the search for New York’s Funniest Stand-Up. Contestants have two minutes to deliver their best material to proceed through the rounds to the finals held on Broadway.

HK International Comedy Festival
Where: Hong Kong
Where: Early to mid October
For an Asian style hoot head to Hong Kong in October to enjoy comedians from all over the world, although there are separate English and Chinese sections. The festival also includes a night featuring improvisational comedy.
