Gold Coast Marathon

There are many sports events in the water and on the beaches of the Gold Coast, in Queensland, Australia, and this location also hosts a marathon that takes in the picturesque scenery along the shore.

Held in June or July, the cooler months of the year on the Gold Coast, the Gold Coast Marathon is known for its flat course and good running times. Temperatures range from lows of 12 degrees Celsius to average highs of 21 degrees Celsius. With the breeze coming from the Pacific Ocean it can help cool the runners, and coming from the runners' side there is rarely a headwind to run into or tailwind.

The course for the Gold Coast Marathon not only has few changes in elevation but few corners as well. The runners go along the beach area of Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads to start the marathon and then finish the run a bit more inland as they pass by Labrador and Southport.

The first Gold Coast Marathon was run in 1979, with Eric Sigmont winning the men's race and Mary Murison winning the women's event. Other winners of the Gold Coast Marathon include Lee Troop, Toyokazu Yoshimura, Brad Camp and William Chebon Chebor. Nicholas Manza won in 2011 with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 1 second.

The Gold Coast Marathon does have a cut off time of 6 hours and 30 minutes but that is more than enough time for many amateur runners and older participants to finish the course. Robert Horman, competing in the 85 years to 89 years age class, recorded a time of 4 hours, 34 minutes and 55 seconds in the 2004 race.

Those that want to take part but don't want to take on the complete marathon distance can run the Half Marathon, 10km Run, 5.7km Challenge or the Junior Dash.

Getting to the Gold Coast can mean flying to Gold Coast Airport, or for some international flights arriving by Brisbane Airport. There are many bus services to use around the Gold Coast area. Runners also get free shuttle bus services to get to and from the marathon. These services start at the Sports Super Centre at Runaway Bay and also the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre at Broadbeach.

The Gold Coast is the place to visit in Australia for amusement parks. Movie World, Dreamworld, Sea World and Wet 'n' Wild Water World are located in the area. Sports teams that play their games there are the AFL's Gold Coast Suns, NRL's Gold Coast Titans and Gold Coast Blaze of the NBL.
