Ground Zero

This is the site in Lower Manhattan of one of the saddest days in American history. On September 11, 2001, both of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed by terrorists flying hijacked planes into the towers. The original design of the World Trade Center was a seven building complex. The twin towers were 110 stories high and the World Trade Center opened in 1973. It quickly became an iconic part of the New York skyline.

The recent history of the site goes back to 1958, when David Rockefeller made plans to build a complex on the Lower Manhattan 's east side. The principle architect on the project was Minoru Yamasaki. Construction began in 1966 and the World Trade Center opened for business in 1973. It has been featured in several movies prior to its destruction in 2001.

Plans are currently underway to revitalize Ground Zero. Already this is an important site, one forever burned into the psyche of the New York and American people. The historic Freedom Tower will that be rising from the ashes of the old World Trade Towers and will be replacing the entire complex. The finished tower will be 1,776 feet tall when completed. The first new building on site is 7 WTC which opened in 2006. In all there will be five new skyscrapers, a memorial and a transportation hub at the new World Trade Center , delivering an exciting architectural dimension to a historically significant memorial. There will also be a performing arts complex on the site of the original World Trade Center.
