Hervey Bay Travel Guide

Hervey Bay is a coastal city, north of Brisbane in Queensland. It’s a peaceful destination with a comfortable sub-tropical climate and a pleasantly cool summer breeze. Hervey Bay’s two most popular attractions are its whale-watching tours and Fraser Island.

There are a large number of whale-watching tour operators in Hervey Bay; all offering boat trips to watch the humpback whales play. Many of the tours will provide you with lunch while you watch the magnificent humpback whales frolic in the clear waters.

The whales alone make Hervey Bay worth a visit, but while you’re there you can also experience the beautiful beaches and lakes of Fraser Island. The World Heritage listed site is the largest sand island in the world, stretching over 120 kilometres. The island is a great spot for watching the wildlife, with over 300 species of bird and wild dingoes living there.

For those interested in taking a look at the history of Hervey Bay, Burrum District Museum explains the mining history of the city. Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum is also a fascinating place to while away a few hours.

If you like an active holiday, there is no shortage of sports on offer. You can take part in golf, lawn bowls, tennis and even go-karting. Horse riding is also possible, and it’s a great place for cycling with 18 kilometres of cycleway running along the water front.
