Hunter Valley Travel Guide

The Hunter Valley stretches over more than 130 kilometres through New South Wales. It has a population of more than 630,000 people, most of whom live in the coastal cities of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

Lake Macquarie is a huge salt-water lake, four times the size of Sydney Harbour. Here, tourists can enjoy sailing, fishing, swimming, cruising and scuba diving.

The Hunter Valley’s luxurious country retreats and beautiful landscape make it a popular destination for romantic breaks. Many tour companies in the area offer hot air balloon rides for one of the most memorable ways to view the scenery. You can also take in the view on the scenic cruises that run frequently on the Hunter River. 

The Hunter Valley is a top tourist attraction for food and wine lovers. Famous for its local produce, the Hunter Valley offers many vineyards, wineries, breweries and cheese makers where visitors can take a tour and sample the food and drink.   

Hikers can explore the impressive Watagans National Park, which covers more than 7,700 hectares. The Werekata National Park is a smaller park where visitors can take part is a Discovery walk and find out about the local history, and the flora and fauna.

Those wanting to see some typical Australian wildlife will enjoy Hunter Valley Zoo, where koalas, dingoes, wombats, reptiles, and kangaroos can be found.
