Grand Canyon USA

Once of the most iconic images of the USA, and perhaps the world, is the sight of the immense Grand Canyon, cutting through the floor of Arizona, USA. The distance is not that formidable – 71km, round trip, or cut that down to 34km if you hop on a shuttle after the trek. But the heat out here can be deadly if you are not well-prepared.

The Grand Canyon is so large it can be seen from space, but up close, it’s even more impressive. The geological formations at the bottom of the Grand Canyon date to a whopping 2 billion years ago, while the top formations are from 5 million years ago. Descending the Grand Canyon is therefore like talking a walk through Earth’s history.

Grand Canyon, Las Vegas

Every year, up to five million people come to gawk at the Grand Canyon’s majesty. However, since the scale of the Grand Canyon is vast, all the visitors added up still seem like ants in comparison.

If you want to get away from the crowds, pick up your backpack and head out on the path. Make sure you bring enough water, know the way, and stick to decent paths. In order to get a good feel for the size and grandeur of Grand Canyon, it’s best to walk from one side to the other side, and then back. Take your time – three days will do it.

Grand Canyon in Las Vegas

To reach Grand Canyon, you will likely fly to Las Vegas, because the closest city to the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, is not convenient for flights. From the giddiness of Las Vegas, it will be a five hour drive out to Grand Canyon. Alternatively, you can fly into Phoenix first, and then drive to Grand Canyon. There are many motels at the park border, out on Highway 180, while getting closer to the main attraction by staying at Grand Canyon village will give you a better experience, at a premium price.

One way to get from one side of the Grand Canyon to the other is to start out from South Kaibab, on the South Rim. This path will take you quickly down to the Colorado River. Then you take North Kaibab Trail to the North Rim. You return to the South Rim via Silver Bridge and Bright Angel Trail.
