The Republic of Indonesia includes over 17,000 islands and is the world's largest archipelagic state. The major islands of Indonesia include Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, New Guinea and East Timor. The capital of Indonesia is Jakarta, which is on the island of Java.

Many volcanoes, active and dormant, dot the awesome landscape that is filled with amazing rainforests and rare or near extinct Asian flora and fauna with the world's second highest level of biodiversity.

 

Reaching Indonesia

You can reach the islands of Indonesia by plane or boat. The International Airport in Jakarta and Bali and the domestic airline Garuda has connecting flights to all other neighboring such as Malaysia , Singapore , Philippines and Australia . Many of the major airlines in the world fly to Indonesia including American Airlines, Qantas, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, EVA, KLM, Lufthansa, etc. Locally, one can use the ferries or domestic flights to get from island to island. The beaches all over Indonesia are breathtakingly beautiful and serene with very few disturbances except a few tourists sunbathing or snorkeling. Java, Indonesia's most populous island is known for its fascinating beaches and thrilling safaris with a chance to spot Rhinos, Deer, Macaques, Gibbons, wild Ox, Hornbills and even Java Tigers. Sumatra has many volcanoes and Lake Toba is one of the deepest crater lakes in the world. Samosir Island is the tropical paradise with its temperate climate and the attraction of Batak culture, arts and crafts. Bali is known for its volcanoes, rice paddies and mountains as well as the sandy, beautiful beaches. Bali hill tribes are also well known for their silver jewelry and crafts that are popular all over the world.

In Indonesia , tourists can enjoy snorkeling, surfing, rock climbing or just lazing around on the beach. Yogyakarta has ornate temples with creative paintings, and cultural attractions on display. Borobudur and Prambanan are the most beautiful of temples that date back to the 9 th century. At the Prambanan temples, do not miss the dramatic presentation of the Hindu Ramayana epic and the light show.

Indonesian food is a blend of Chinese, European, Middle Eastern and Indian cuisines. Coconut milk, Rice, Spices such as Nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon, saffron, etc. are used in some dishes. Similar to Thai cuisine, this style of cooking combines contrasting flavors such as spicy, sour, sweet, hot and bitter. Lemon grass, cardamom, tamarind and chillies are used to flavor dishes that are served with rice or noodles.

Weather

Indonesia has a tropical climate with the temperatures ranging form 74 degrees F to 105 degrees or more in summer months. The highest temperatures are usually in May and June. The best time to travel to Indonesia are in the cooler months between November and February.

Precautions

The political climate in Indonesia is stable now, but there are periods when tensions flare up. Some occurrences of terrorism against tourists have been reported. Since it's predominantly a Muslim country, it may be wise to dress conservatively.
