Koh Phangan

Thailand 's southern Gulf islands are renowned for their natural beauty, including tropical white sandy beaches, clear blue waters and gorgeous scenery, though in the last few decades the islands have also built a reputation as being a great destination for backpackers and for visitors looking for an excellent opportunity for self-indulgence. Ko Pha Ngan has succeeded in building the best reputation for this because it's here that the world-famous Full Moon Party takes place.

Koh Phangan

As the name suggests, the Full Moon Party takes place on every full moon, starting in the evening and going on until sunrise. The first Full Moon Party happened in 1985 and was quite a spur of the moment thing, unplanned, and at a disco near the beach with the intention of giving thanks to the visiting travellers. The event went down well, despite there being only about 30 tourists present so it became more of a regular event, taking place on every full moon. The party soon got a reputation to the point where there are now usually between 20,000 and 30,000 party-goers at every single Full Moon Party, every month!

The Full Moon Party takes place in the town of Haad Rin , right on the beach. All of the beach-side bars are open, each blasting out their own music and whilst many of the tourists enjoying the world's biggest beach party will only have a few drinks, there are many who will not! Drinking copious amounts of alcohol seems to be the aim of many tourists, not to mention the other dubious, and illegal, substances which are often available. The whole affair is renowned for being extremely hedonistic!
