National Gallery of Art

The museum's construction was financed by the US Congress and collections were initially acquired through art collection donations from Andrew Mellon, Samuel Henry Kress, Rosenwald, and Joseph Widener. The museum is divided into two buildings, the West and the East Building , which are linked by a spacious underground pass called “the Concourse”. There one can go to a food court or a gift shop. It has a neoclassical design by John Russell Pope and characterized by massive columned portico and domes for the West building and geometrical classicism that reflect interlocking prisms for the East Building .

As to its collections, the NGA is considered to house one of the world's finest Western paintings and sculptures. The East Building has its focus on modern and contemporary arts such as those of Matisse, Picasso, Pollock, Warhol, Calder and many others. It also houses research facilities and the Center for the Advanced Study in Visual Arts. The West Building focuses on sculpture and painting works of medieval to 19 th century European artist and also pre-20th century American artists such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh and da Vinci. Across the Seventh Street is a 6.1 acre garden, called the Sculpture Garden , which exhibits a number of sculpted pieces made by Miro, Bourgeois, and Guimard. There is also a large fountain that served as an ice rink on winters and numerous stone seating.

The art museum is located between 3 rd and 7 th St. , National Constitutional Avenue on the National Mall. It is open from Mondays to Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from 11 am to 6 pm. The art museum is declared close to the public every December 25 and January 1. There is no admission fee for entry on to the East and the West Buildings of the museum.
