Staten Island Ferry

The south ferry near Whitehall Street is the arrival and departure point for the ferry in Manhattan . At the St. George terminal the ferries arrive and depart for Staten Island . Passengers get a spectacular view of the city travelling in the prominent ferry.

The journey lasts around 22 minutes, with the ferries covering five miles during the quick trip. The Staten Island Ferry is free and even allows cyclists the opportunity to bring the bicycle with them in the lower deck of the ferry, also free of charge.

Throughout New York , travel on the ferry is the cheapest mode of transport. Even in the late 20 th century, only fifty cents was charged. The price in the early days was just five cents reaching only fifty cents before being made a free service in 1997.

The Staten Island Ferry runs once every 15 minutes during peak hours; however the frequency is reduced in the night and the middle of the days. Additional ferry trips are organized at the weekends to accommodate the increase in the number of passengers.
