The city of Townsville is on the north-eastern coast of Australia, in Queensland. It has a tropical savanna climate, and is warm all year round, but can be very wet between the months of November and May. Townsville is often picked as a stop-off point for people driving to Cairns, and it’s also popular a base for those wanting to explore the Great Barrier Reef. The city is located in a hilly area, although Townsville itself is fairly flat.

People attracted to the city for its proximity to the Reef should pay a visit to the Reef HQ Aquarium, the largest living coral reef aquarium.
One of the main attractions of the area is Magnetic Island, which can be found 8 kilometres from the city itself. Nearly 70% of Magnetic Island is a national park, and it’s one of the largest Great Barrier Reef islands. Home to thousands of koalas and many unusual species of bird, this is a great spot to enjoy the wildlife. Another good wildlife attraction is Billabong Sanctuary, where you can see over 100 species of Australian animals. The Mount Spec National Park is also an interesting place to visit, where the quiet Paluma Village with its cool cafes and rainforest walks can show you a totally different side to the area.
