Bonita Ironman New Zealand Triathlon
Where: Taupo, New Zealand
When: March
In New Zealand they take triathlon seriously and this one is a fairly extreme challenge. Fortunately it’s at least surrounded by stunning scenery and if you can’t complete the combination of a 3.8km swim, 179.2km cycle and full marathon (42.2km) you can always watch.

Xterra off-road triathlon
Where: Rotorua, New Zealand
When: April
This event at the stunning blue lake in Rotorua is part of the Xterra Global Tour and the largest single day off-road triathlon festival in the world. It consists of a 1km lake swim, 32km mountain bike and 11km trail run. People can also enter in teams or simply do an 11 or 21km walk/run.

Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon
Where: San Francisco, California
When: Mid June
Given that no one every escaped from the maximum-security prison on the island, the challenge is always a drawcard for participants to accomplish that task. In order to do so they must swim a frigid 2.4km from Alcatraz Island to shore so they can bike 29km and then run 13km through the hilly terrain of San Francisco Bay. The run includes the notorious "Sand Ladder", 400 uneven log steps climbing up a beachside cliff.

Hawaiian Ironman
Where: Kona, Hawaii
When: October
This was the first modern long-distance triathlon event and the gruelling 3.86 km swim, 180.2 km bike ride and 42.2 km run is one of the ultimate events on the international circuit.

Noosa Triathlon
Where: Noosa, Queensland, Australia
When: October / November
Triathlon is big in Australia and this is one of the largest events. Combined with the fantastic beaches, pretty canals and luxurious waterfront homes it’s also a prime tourist destination. Over 8500 competitors tackle this Olympic distance course each year.
